Kelly Beats Fibromyalgia and Shares Her Story

Nurse Kelly From Utah Shares Her Story About Overcoming Fibromyalgia By Working With Me In A Get Healthy Program

I’ve struggled with this for 15 years. About 10 years ago, my son who was little, maybe 5 or something, he came home from Sunday school class where they had asked him to draw a picture of their mom. He came running into my room, found me on my bed where I usually was and he handed me this picture he was so proud of drawing. I was so saddened by what he had drawn, it was me in my bed … that’s how my 5 year old son saw me, and I just felt heartbroken. I thought I don’t want to feel this way. I feel hopeless and helpless, but I felt I deserved better than that. My family deserves more than that. From that time on, I thought I’m going to figure it out. I felt run down all the time and eventually, my upper body ached a bunch … I couldn’t sleep at night, I would cry.

Now my pain is 80% improved. My energy is greatly improved. I feel more like my old self.

I’d just like to say to people out there wondering should I try this or not, and if you’ve tried a lot of things but they haven’t quite worked out, I know where you’re at. I can honestly tell you that if you put your all into your program, that you can find a way out of your despair and your pain … not having the life that you want. We all deserve that.

Kelly:  Hello.

Dr. M: Hi Kelly, thank you for joining me.

Kelly: Sure, glad to be here.

Dr. M:

Thanks, I appreciate it. Tell me a little bit about you, you’ve got an interesting background. When we met, you’d had fibromyalgia for about 15 years. You’re an registered nurse and your husband is an internist. What’s interesting to me is that a lot of folks I take care of are RNs, and in your case you really didn’t want to take a lot of the prescription drugs. You could have, your husband is a medical doctor and he could have given you anything. Yet you really were opposed to that. Tell me a little bit about your fibromyalgia and how it all started.

Kelly:

I think probably 15 years ago after the birth of my 4th child, I had a fever of unknown origin. After that, I never really felt the same. I felt run down all the time and eventually, my upper body ached a bunch … I couldn’t sleep at night, I would cry. After talking to my older sister who’s about 10 years older, she was diagnosed with fibromyalgia maybe a few years earlier than that, so I wondered if that was my problem too. I also continued to have poor sleep, low energy and my weight continued to go up. I saw many different doctors and was given the diagnosis of fibromyalgia. Then my quest to heal myself began. I searched out different doctors, read what I could on the Internet, tried different protocols and some of them helped me, but I always felt like it was a puzzle with pieces missing. I felt like I know I can feel better, at least 80% better than I’m feeling … I bought your book a number of years ago but never read it. I had tried all these other options and then I came across your name again online, so I thought I’m going to take a look at that book again.

I read through it and I really felt like you were speaking to me. I felt like your approach was a great way to approach it. I liked that you didn’t want to just cover up my symptoms by giving me an antidepressant or pain medicine. When we first met, I was on Ambien for sleep. I know that that was of great importance … poor sleep was a major contributing factor. I felt like well, to keep myself alive I’m going to use Ambien right now and I did. It did seem to help for a while, but something I found with Ambien was I would sleep eat. I would get in bed like I was told, I would take my Ambien and then I would get up and I would make myself 4 pieces of toast. My kids said “Mom, why were you making so much toast last night?” They would find me in the kitchen and I would have no memory of it. That was frustrating, thinking I’m eating and not even enjoying it. One night I even tried to drive my husband to the car and had no memory of that. Luckily my family caught me, so I thought I don’t want to be taking this anymore. Some other things led me to you and I really feel like it was an answer to my prayers … I have to be honest with you.

Dr. M:

Your energy was really low, tell me about your energy now. How’s your energy now?

Kelly:

My energy is greatly improved. I feel more like my old self. There are days when I struggle … my husband made a good living so I was able to retire from nursing and take care of my kids full time.  I had learned how to only give out as much energy as I needed, as the day would go on. I wouldn’t do extra things. I would take care of my family, I would do my church stuff, just what I needed to get done to keep everybody going and there was little time left for anything that I was interested in or something that I wanted to do … I just learned to live that way for a while. Now I feel like the energy is more back up to normal on a more consistent level. I feel pretty good, not perfect but good.

Dr. M:

I don’t think any of us feel perfect, but it’s really about being able to get your life back. one of the things that people give me a hard time about is the title of the book, Treating and Beating Fibromyalgia, and that that implies a cure. I don’t know whether we call it a cure or not, what it’s really about is getting your life back. That doesn’t mean you’re never going to struggle, but now you can do things that you couldn’t do before. You can see the light at the end of the tunnel, you feel like you’ve got some hope whereas before when we talked, you had a tremendous amount of pain. You just put up with it because you had to, but tell me about your pain now.

Kelly:

I would say my pain is 80% improved. I do occasionally take a Tramadol, at night if I’m lying there … the pain seems to bother you more when you’re lying in bed trying to sleep. I don’t know if it’s worse or just because you’re trying to sleep. I will take a Tramadol, never more than 1 ever in a day and my sleep has greatly improved with the 5-HTP and magnesium. I feel like those have been really positive steps, I feel really pretty good.

Dr. M:

Tell me about your weight. One of your goals was to lose weight because your metabolism had become really compromised, even though you’re on the Armor Thyroid. Like a lot of people, you just get so run down and even if you try to eat healthy, you can’t lose that weight because your metabolism is shot.  Tell me about the weight loss.

Kelly:

I’m kind of a proactive person for the most part when my health is involved. I tried different diets, ones you see on TV ad I would stick to them, but nothing really seemed to work. With your program, I’ve lost over 35 pounds. I’ve kept it off for a month which is very positive for me. I’m still watching what I eat, slowly adding carbs back in and different things. I’m not perfect, I have cheated here and there eating a piece of candy.

Dr. M: Sure, that’s what life is about.

Kelly: I’m believing that I can keep it off and I think that’s a positive step too.

Dr. M:

Sure. The thing about the diet is, certainly losing the weight is great. For a lot of people, it helps them get off a lot of the medications and get healthy, reduces their pain, helps their metabolism but it really shows you that the foods you eat can affect how you feel. It’s a learning curve that you have. You start to learn more and more about certain foods that you just don’t want anymore, because if you eat them you feel bad.

Kelly:

Absolutely. Before I read your book, I had this feeling of being so puffy and inflamed … not just from being overweight, but I had this puffy, inflamed feeling all the time. I really think that the diet helped so much with that. I have found now that I’ve eaten a few foods, maybe that’s not good for me. I’m feeling a little of that inflamed feeling again, so it’s just a learning curve.

Dr. M:

Sure. What would you say to those folks that have been told you just have to learn to live with it? What’s your advice to them?

Kelly:

Like I said, I’ve struggled with this for 15 years. Like I said, my older sister suffers with the same problem. She took a different road, she’s one more to say I’m just going to live with it. I thought no, I’m going to do something. It took me a while to find the right protocol, but I really do feel like you have helped me immensely. I’m very thankful for that. It’s not always easy sticking to the diet when other people around you are enjoying food, because our culture is built around food it seems like. You notice that when you’re eating healthy … wow, all we do is eat. I just felt like this was an answer to prayer. I knew that if I give my best, it really could help me and you have. I feel very positive about my future and what I can do for myself and my family now.

Dr. M:

I really appreciate you joining me tonight and sharing your story. You worked really hard to get where you’re at and if anybody deserves, it, you do. I really appreciate you sharing your story tonight. Is there anything you’d like to share before you leave us?

Kelly:

I’d just like to say to people out there wondering should I try this or not, and if you’ve tried a lot of things but they haven’t quite worked out, I know where you’re at. I can honestly tell you that if you put your all into your program, that you can find a way out of your despair and your pain … not having the life that you want. We all deserve that.

Dr. M:

Absolutely. Kelly, thanks so much for joining me tonight. I really appreciate it and I look forward to talking to you soon. I look forward to hearing back from you and you’re always part of the family. I look forward to hear more good things from you in the future.

Kelly: Thank you, and thank you to your staff too. They’re wonderful people.

Dr. M: They are wonderful. Thanks for sharing that, have a great night.

Kelly: You too.

Dr. M:   I want to thank Kelly for joining me tonight. Like all my patients I work with, as I mentioned earlier I keep saying work hard … but she did. As you heard, she’s a mom, she was a nurse and she’s got 4 children, so a very busy life and she could have easily given up at one point because she felt so bad, but she didn’t. Now she’s reaping the results of hanging in there and doing what she needed to do, which was to be proactive and to seek out information. Fortunately what I have written in my book resonated with her and made sense to her, and she prayed about it as a lot of my patients do. That made sense to her, and we were successful and we’ll continue to be so.
