What do you do if you’re traveling down the Interstate at 70mph, driving from Birmingham Alabama (War Eagle) to Miami Florida and the oil light comes on?
You could cover up the annoying light with a permanent black marker or piece of colored tape. But does covering up the symptom, the oil light, solve the problem? No of course not. It only prolongs the inevitable outcome, engine failure. The glowing oil light isn’t the problem. The problem is that there isn’t enough oil in the car. Rather than covering up the symptom, fix the cause of the oil light coming on by stopping and putting oil in the car.
You always want to correct the cause(s), this then takes care of the symptoms.
Be Careful Don’t Fall Into This Trap
The usual approach by natural oriented doctors is a shot-gun “oh here try these supplements” approach. Yes it is a natural oriented approach but guessing doesn’t work with a complicated illness like fibromyalgia.
Yes Vitamins, Minerals, and Amino Acids Arte The Building Blocks For Restoring Health
Traditional medical doctors often scoff at the notion of taking vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to improve your health, but does anyone suffer from a drug deficiency? Well, of course not. And yet, those with fibromyalgia often end up on a medical merry-go-round, seeing one doctor after another – taking an endless concoction of life-draining, potentially dangerous drugs: drugs to put you to sleep, drugs to wake you up, pain pills, mood-altering drugs (for the side effects of the sleep drugs), sedatives, and muscle relaxants. It just never ends. Drug therapy can be useful; however, merely covering symptoms with drugs often leads to further problems.
Nutrients – not drugs – are what make the hormones that regulate your body. Every essential chemical in your body, including thyroid hormones, testosterone, estrogen, neurotransmitters (serotonin, norepinephrine, etc.), antibodies, adrenaline, cortisol, and white blood cells, are made from vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, and amino acids.
A Random Scattered Approach Won’t Work, Even If All Natural
I’ve learned the hard way that for me to be successful in treating the complicated medical misfits, those with fibro who have been everywhere and tried everything, I must do the detective work, order the appropriate tests, find and fix the cause(s).
My patients have already been to dozens of doctors and tried dozens of drugs and supplements before they ever make an appointment with me. The last thing I want to do is hand out a bunch of supplements, “here let’s try this,” without testing. This approach hasn’t worked in the past and it won’t work now. Taking the time to do the detective work, order specific specialized tests-then create a specific treatment “get healthy” plan allows me to be successful when so many other doctors have failed.
To get healthy you must correct the cause(s) of your symptoms. You learn the cause(s) by doing the correct testing. Common blood work isn’t enough-must of you have been told all your labs look good. Of course you’re question is why do I feel so bad when all my tests are normal?
The answer is they aren’t doing the right tests. I devote a whole chapter to testing, getting the right testing done in my upcoming 5th edition book Treating and Beating Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, out late summer early fall 2013.
After 18 plus years of specializing in fibromyalgia the only thing that makes sense, the only thing that truly works long term, is to get the patient healthy. Once the cause(s) are found a battle plan can be formed and implemented. Until then all else is guessing. I encourage to learn more in books, find a doctor who is willing to do the detective work, order the appropriate specialized tests and treat cause(s) not just symptoms. This is how you get healthy. This is how you beat poor health and fibromyalgia.
