It Blows My Mind

prescription pillsI don’t get it. The pharmaceutical industry and its puppets, traditional medicine, have filled us up with propaganda for years. Now, not only do we accept the bought and ghost written, manipulated, made to read as wish, studies as being valid, we’ve also become jaded to the warnings of side effects to drugs. In fact a new study shows people have more trust and are more willing to use drugs that have side effects.

We’ve all heard or read about the side effects of the latest greatest new drug –

The commercial shows a happy couple running on the beach with their galloping golden retriever-life is better on drug “xyz.”

Then towards the end of the commercial the announcer says in a rapid yet, hushed voice, “XYZ” may cause blurred vision, hearing loss, headaches, insomnia, frequent urination, liver failure, kidney disease, hallucinations, and sudden death.

Liver failure, kidney disease, death, should all be a deterrent, yet apparently not.

A recent study shows that these dangerous warnings don’t deter us at all from taking a prescription drug and new research shows it can ironically boost the prescriptions’ appeal.

Researchers found that warnings actually improve how consumers view the products, rather than making them think twice and scare them away. And it may potentially increase the desire for the product over time.

The study, published in the journal “psychological science” tested consumer’s habits after watching cigarette and artificial sweetener adds, both of which came with some pretty strong warnings.

Researchers found that participants who were given the opportunity to purchase that product soon after seeing the ad bought less if the ad included the warning but, and this is the key part, participants who made purchases of the product a few days later bought more, if the ad included the warning.

The conclusion by the researchers? The warning backfired because there was psychological distance created by the delay between the ad and the decision to buy the product. And this distance made side effects seem abstract and the warning turned into a gauge of the drug maker’s honesty and trustworthiness.

rx pill bottlesWARNING – Drugs can be dangerous please know what you are taking, know what your children are taking – be informed.

Last week I had a mom consult me about her 20-year old son who had become housebound, lifeless, anxiety ridden, and severely depressed from taking atypical psychotic medications-Risperdal and Latuda. It all started with him complaining that he couldn’t keep up in his honor classes in high school-so his parents agreed to put him on ADHD medication Vyvanse.

The Vyvanse caused him to become delirious and out of control. He was hospitalized and has for the last 2 years lived a life of hell on one antipsychotic drug after another. Before Vyvanse he was a top- notch student with the world waiting-now he can’t leave his house, can’t sleep, and paces the house dealing with drug-induced tremors.

This is the best medicine can do-drug someone into semiconscious state. It reminds me of Jack Nicholson and One Flew Over The Cuckoo Nest.

Please read about your drugs or the drugs recommended for your children.

I felt a moment of hope when I read this. For the past 12yrs I’ve been disabled on Medicare which will not pay for massages, vitamin/supplements, your services, etc. I can’t even get help with food so I can eat, much less foods I desperately need. I have suffered with anemia & as time goes by without my body getting nutrients my anemia gets worse & have no energy to get out. That’s not even mentioning my fibro, cfs, chronic pain, sleep disorder, ddd, herniated disc cervical (above&below acdf w/titanium plate) L5&S1. Too many illnesses to list including the side effects of the drugs I must take to function at all. I am going to try my best to watch tonight & pray there is relief for je &! The many, many people in need. Sincerely, Kimberly

Hi! This is so true!! 15 years ago I was diagnosed by a rhuematologist who gave me a prescription for Prozac! Then, a chiropractor told me, “Well, if you were just thankful for your blessings, you wouldn’t have fibromyalgia!” At that time I was unable to climb stairs or walk without a cane. THANK YOU so much for your books and blogs that have helped me so much! I have learned what to eat and not to eat, taken supplements and found out which exercises I can do. (Retiring from teaching kindergarten and 1st grade probably helped, too!!)
