Deepak Chopra, MD said, “happy thoughts create happy molecules, and healthy thoughts create healthy molecules.” How you think about health and illness determines how you will behave. Your thoughts release certain chemicals from your brain, and those chemicals can either be poisonous or they can become the curing balm your body needs.
We are gardeners of our bodies. Our body, mind, and spirit need to be nurtured and tendered with the attention you would give the ultimate garden. Study upon study have shown that everything we eat, drink, breathe, and even think affects our body and mind. Our gardens must be freed of weeds, stones, and stumps so that our plants (cells) can grow. The healthier these cells, the better we feel.
Most of the essential nutrients our body needs to thrive are not naturally made by our bodies, and therefore must be attained through foods and supplements.
Sadly, modern food processing completely strips the nutrients from our foods, which means that you can’t get the recommended daily intake of vitamins and minerals from your typical grocery shopping, even if you eat six or seven servings of fresh fruits and veggies every day. Astonished? So are we!
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration conducted a study on 234 different kinds of foods over a period of two years. What they found was more surprising than any of us could have anticipated. The average American diet has less than 80% of the recommended daily allowance of one or more of the following essential nutrients:
Additional studies from other sources found that more than 50% of Americans are deficient in the natural muscle-relaxant, magnesium. Frighteningly, more than 2/3 of American children are extremely deficient in more than two essential nutrients.
Nearly all children in America are deficient in omega-3 (fish oil) and other amino acids, and these children are often found to suffer from mental disabilities such as ADD or ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder, as well as other attention and focus disorders.
Starting children on a good multivitamin and essential fatty acid supplement will be vital to their overall health, growth, and development. It’s important to choose a product that is not mostly garbage, too. Most of the popular brand names you see on television or in advertisements are going to be chock full of fillers, additives, and artificial chemicals that will make it hard to digest.
This goes for adults as well. A quality multivitamin mineral supplement is the first place to start to begin tendering and fertilizing the ground that is your body to make it more amicable for healthy cells (plants) to grow. You can then build around these two supplements and add additional dosages based on your needs. Your internal body is just as unique as your external body, so while you may need 1000 mg of vitamin C, your neighbor may need 3000 mg. It all depends on your deficiency and whether or not you have a chronic illness.
There are hundreds of thousands of studies that show quality multivitamins reduce the risk of heart disease, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, cancer, and a plethora of other chronic illnesses.
Quality is the key here. I cannot mention this enough. You would think a popular brand like Centrum, One-A-Day, and other heavily marketed vitamins would be good for you, but they aren’t. They are mostly full of garbage and sometimes even get excreted completely undigested in our stools. When choosing a quality multivitamin mineral supplement, look for ones that have no additives, fillers, sugars, or additional chemicals. Try your Whole Foods market, Farmer’s Market, or talk with a naturopathic practitioner about which brands are best.
Do your research and know which supplement brand will work for you and your family, especially if you have a chronic illness like fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome. Correcting deficiencies are going to be of utmost importance for you because you will likely need higher dosages. So, make sure you are choosing a product that is being digested completely.
If you don’t notice immediate improvement in your overall energy and well-being (though most will), then keep going at it and look into finding out what kind of deficiency you have so you can then choose additional supplements to correct the imbalance.
Aging and those with chronic illnesses have less ability to absorb vitamins and minerals from their diet. You become less able to digest the essential nutrients from the foods and are more likely to need higher doses of supplementation. It’s possible that this decreased absorption could be playing a role in Alzheimer’s disease, which has increased dramatically, over the last few decades.
Always remember that your biochemistry is different from every other human being on the planet. Your unique garden is in its own climate and environment, so you will need to spend time learning what type of fertilizer and soil will help you grow into a beautifully ornamented and functional garden.
